Welcome
hla associates Role Modeling Training & Tools

Welcome to the RoleModeling™ web site. Role Modeling™ comprises the tools and techniques which support the creation, dissemination and maintenance of role models and Role-based business practices.

Role Modeling (RM) is a simple but powerful technique used by individuals and groups to clarify their roles and responsibilities with respect to each other.

RM is impressive as both a tactical tool and a strategic technique. As a tactical tool it is used to resolve inter- and intra-organizational "we/they" problems and create collaborative work processes. As a strategic technique it   engineers an organizational structure with effective distribution of responsibility, accountability and control, while  simultaneously developing acceptance of that structure.

Scenarios based on role models show how roles collaborate in responsive processes to meet the complex and potentially conflicting needs of the stakeholders and their organizations. RM can be practiced from the top down, bottom up, or middle out. The technique resolves integration issues naturally when model boundaries overlap.

RM succeeds because it adheres to several basic principles:

bulletA Non-Confrontational Approach - RM focuses on roles and responsibilities, rather than organizational stovepipes. It develops agreement through understanding the nature of the work.
bulletRoles Are Fundamental and Flexible - A person can fill many Roles. A Role can be filled by many people. Systems, Groups and Teams can all be understood in terms of their Roles, Responsibilities, and Collaborations
bulletDevelopment By Team Members - Models are identified by representative team members rather than imposed from above, greatly enhancing chances for team buy-in.
bulletExpressive Notation - Allows for easy communication and maintenance. Models are evolvable and reusable.
bulletHigh Cost-Effectiveness - Impressive results with minimal investment in training and support.

Role Modeling - Try it. You'll like it!

At hla associates, we offer full consulting, training, and support for the practice of Role Modeling. We assess its applicability within your organization, facilitate initial modeling engagements, train facilitators within your own groups, and provide hotline, bulletin board, mentoring, and consulting services to support your use of RM and share the latest tips and techniques for achieving success. We have developed software tools, called Roleware™, which simplify the documentation of Role Models, thus making it much easier for people to share, understand and evolve the models as the business evolves.

The hla associates link takes you to more information about hla associates and how to contact us. The Role Modeling link gets you more detailed descriptions and examples of Role Modeling. That's where the meat of this website can be found. The Training & Tools link leads to a description of some courses and tools we offer in support of Role Modeling. While Role Modeling is best introduced in facilitated sessions, it is meant to become a natural part of the language used in day-to-day operations. As that evolution occurs there is less reliance on facilitators and more direct support with courses, tools, and peer discussion groups.

The Glossary link leads to the full glossary of terms used here and in Role Modeling. Terms in the glossary appear as hyperlinks when used throughout this site.   The Contents link leads to a listing of the structure of this site. Finally, there is a Feedback page provided so that you can give us comments on the material you find here and make suggestions for improvement. In the near future we will also provide links to discussion groups which practitioners and potential users of Role Modeling can use in support of each other.

Have a nice visit and please send us your feedback.

Thanks,

    Henry Apfelbaum
